Preparation for installation

Before assembling the shredder

Assessment of waste for discharge

The diameter of the waste pipe is always sufficient. The domestic garbage disposer is designed for a waste pipe diameter of 40 mm and above. The height of the waste pipe in the wall should not be higher than the discharge opening of the disposer. For installation without the need to modify your existing waste pipe, the distance between the bottom of the sink and the center of the waste pipe in the wall must not be less than 16 cm.

The given variants and specified heights of waste are only approximate, based on the most commonly used standards. It depends on the height of the worktop and the depth of the sink, which may be different. If you need an exact figure, you must calculate it from the data obtained at the place of installation and the specific model of the disposer, which you will find in "Chapter 9. Technical drawings and dimensions" in the user manual or directly in the range of parameters for individual disposers as an item "disposer dimensions".

Variants:

  • The height of the waste pipe under the sink should ideally be 35 - 40 cm measured from the ground to the center of the pipe. In general, the lower, the better.
  • In many cases, the waste is slightly higher according to the old standards, but if it is about 52 cm from the ground, nothing changes, you just need to use a siphon with a wider range for adjusting the height tolerance or mount it upside down. In this case, only the installer's ability to smoothly adjust the siphon is complicated and the pipe must be cut to the exact height. Another option is also to create your own trap - siphon directly from waste bends.
  • If the waste is even higher, the water level will not only be in the siphon, but also in the shredder chamber, which the shredder itself doesn't mind at all, only when it is turned on, the water may tend to splash into the sink. To reduce the discharge of waste, it is usually enough to adjust the slope of the drain pipe if it runs along the wall. However, sometimes it is necessary to cut out and adjust the piping directly in the wall. However, these cases occur very rarely, and only in the case of amateur or unprofessional modifications during one's own reconstructions of residential buildings.

Power supply 220/240V terminated in a socket or an electrical box under the sink.

Connection of the garbage disposal is usually done to the nearest socket via a switch. Depending on the location and type of the selected switch, you can then control the garbage disposal (switching on and off) in several ways according to your preference.

Variants:

Moreover, you can also install an additional safety switch in a hidden place as a child lock.

  • The most commonly used option is the control of the disposer - by a button located directly on the sink surface or worktop (see the picture). This control is the safest! By pressing the button lever, the impulse in the form of air pressure is transferred to a separate box installed under the sink through a hose, where this impulse is detected by a pneumatic switch, which then opens or closes the power supply to the disposer. This option does not require any prior preparations and can be used at any time.
  • Another option could be to connect the garbage disposal directly to the outlet or electrical box under the sink (see the picture). The wiring of this outlet is pre-installed so that the electricity supply is controlled by a standard toggle switch located above the kitchen countertop on the wall, ideally as close to the sink as possible or somewhere near the outlets for other kitchen appliances. This option needs to be taken into account during construction modifications before installing the kitchen unit. Additional installation will require more complex interventions.
  • An alternative option is to use a foot switch or to utilize a set of a wireless remote switch with its own battery and receiver, eliminating the need for additional electrical installation and allowing it to be placed virtually anywhere without violating safety regulations. The switch can be easily screwed or glued to the designated spot.

The water faucet is connected and the sink is securely installed.

An improperly secured sink can cause vibrations and noise.

The diameter of the hole in the sink must be 9 cm.

This opening is now standard in newer and higher-quality sinks. If the opening is smaller, it can be adjusted in stainless steel sinks using special products that cleanly cut the desired hole and create the necessary indentation for embedding and correctly fitting the garbage disposal neck.

Enamel, ceramic, or thin metal sinks cannot be modified.

Recommendation:

At our place, there are small drainage holes known, with approximately 5 cm in size, but they gradually transition to 9 cm. Therefore, when purchasing a new sink, the smaller hole is only present in sinks of older production, clearance sales, or sinks sold in various supermarket promotions, which are also made of very thin sheet metal and have a small depth of about 11-13 cm, thereby compromising their utility properties. The depth may not be immediately apparent, but it plays an important role. A good sink should have a depth of around 18-20 cm.
